🚌 Transportation
Baku's metro is cheap and covers the centre; buy a BakiKart. Bolt and Uber both work and cost little. Gobustan, Quba and Sheki all need a car with driver (₹5,000–₹7,000 a day) as public transport is slow. The airport bus H1 runs to the centre for under ₹50. Roads outside Baku are decent but signage is limited.
🍽️ Best Restaurants
Plov, dolma, kebabs and dushbara dumplings, with mains at ₹400–₹800. Azerbaijani cuisine leans heavily on lamb; vegetarians will manage with dolma, kutabs and salads but should expect a narrower choice than in Georgia. Black tea served in armudu pear-shaped glasses is a national ritual. Alcohol is freely available despite the Muslim majority.
🏨 Best Hotels
Old City for heritage boutique hotels within the walls, Fountain Square for central convenience and restaurants, Seaside Boulevard for views. Baku is more expensive than Tbilisi; expect ₹3,500–₹7,000 for a good central room.
🛡️ Safety & Travel Tips
Very low crime and comfortable for solo travellers. Two specific cautions: never attempt to enter Nagorno-Karabakh, and any evidence of a prior visit to Armenia can cause entry problems. Photographing government buildings is discouraged. Drivers are assertive and pedestrian crossings are treated as suggestions. Summer heat and Caspian humidity peak in July and August.
