Best time to visit: Late March to early April for cherry blossom; November for autumn colour. June is rainy and August is hot and humid.

About Japan

Japan rewards a longer, slower trip than most first-timers plan: nine days covers Tokyo, Kyoto and one side trip properly, while trying to add Hiroshima or Hokkaido turns it into a blur. A Japan Rail Pass pays for itself only if you are covering real distance, so price it against individual shinkansen tickets before buying.

Highlights

Tokyo's Shibuya and Asakusa; Kyoto temples and Fushimi Inari; Nara deer park; Mount Fuji and Hakone; shinkansen travel

🚌 Transportation

The rail network is the best on earth and the reason Japan works for short trips. Price a Japan Rail Pass against individual shinkansen tickets — since the 2023 price rise it only pays off for longer routes. Get a Suica or Pasmo IC card for city trains, buses and convenience stores. Google Maps gives accurate platform-level directions. Luggage forwarding (takkyubin) between hotels costs ₹1,200 and saves hauling bags on trains.

🍽️ Best Restaurants

Convenience-store food is genuinely good: a full meal for ₹300–₹500. Ramen and donburi shops charge ₹600–₹900; a mid-range dinner ₹1,500–₹3,000. Vegetarians face real difficulty — dashi fish stock is in almost everything including 'vegetable' dishes. Learn the phrase for no fish, seek out shojin ryori temple cuisine, and use the Indian restaurants that exist in every city.

🏨 Best Hotels

Tokyo: Shinjuku or Shibuya for nightlife and transport, Asakusa for old-town character and lower prices, Ginza for luxury. Kyoto: near Kyoto Station for convenience, Gion for atmosphere. Business hotels are small but immaculate at ₹5,000–₹8,000; try one ryokan night with tatami and kaiseki dinner.

🛡️ Safety & Travel Tips

Japan has among the lowest crime rates in the world — lost wallets are routinely returned. The genuine risks are natural: earthquakes and typhoons (August–October). Learn the drill and note your hotel's evacuation route. Cash still matters at small restaurants and shrines despite the technology reputation. Tattoos may bar you from onsen and gyms. Do not eat while walking, and keep phone conversations off trains.
