🚌 Transportation
Oman is a driving country — renting a car is close to essential and roads are excellent, well-signed and empty. A 2WD covers Muscat, Nizwa and the main wadis; a 4x4 is required for Wahiba Sands and Jebel Shams. Rentals run ₹2,500–₹4,000 a day, fuel is cheap. Taxis are unmetered and expensive; there is no ride-hailing app of consequence outside Muscat. Public buses exist between cities but not to the sights.
🍽️ Best Restaurants
Omani food is subtle — shuwa (slow-cooked lamb), majboos rice, and fresh grilled hammour. Local restaurants charge ₹300–₹600; hotel dining much more. Indian and Pakistani eateries are everywhere and very cheap, a legacy of long trading ties. Coffee with dates is offered constantly as hospitality; accepting is the polite response. Alcohol is limited to hotel venues.

Muscat: Mutrah for the souq and corniche, Shatti Al Qurum for beaches and restaurants. Nizwa for the interior forts. A night at a Wahiba Sands desert camp (₹4,000–₹12,000) is the trip's highlight for most visitors. Book wadi-adjacent guesthouses to start hikes early.
🛡️ Safety & Travel Tips
Oman is one of the safest and most relaxed countries in the Gulf, and Omanis are notably courteous to visitors. The real dangers are environmental: flash floods can fill a wadi in minutes — never camp in a wadi bed or drive through flowing water; summer heat exceeds 45°C; and mobile coverage fails in the mountains. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees) everywhere outside hotel beaches. Drones are effectively banned without a permit.
