About Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka compresses beaches, tea-country trains, leopard safaris and 2,000-year-old citadels into an island you can cross in a day. Colombo is under four hours from Delhi and entry is visa-free, making it one of the cheapest international trips available to Indians. The classic loop runs Sigiriya–Kandy–Ella–Galle.

Highlights

Sigiriya rock fortress; Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth; the Ella train through tea country; Galle Fort; Yala safari

📍 Where to Go

  • Cultural Triangle — Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa.
  • Kandy and hill country — the Tooth Temple, tea estates, Ella.
  • South coast — Galle Fort, Mirissa, Unawatuna.
  • Yala / Udawalawe — leopard and elephant safaris.

🎯 Things to Do

  • Climb Sigiriya rock fortress at dawn
  • The Kandy–Ella train through tea country
  • Leopard safari at Yala National Park
  • Whale watching from Mirissa (Nov–Apr)
  • Sunset on Galle Fort's ramparts

🚌 Transportation

Hiring a car with driver for the whole trip costs roughly ₹4,000–₹5,500 a day including fuel and is how most visitors travel — distances are short but roads are slow. The exception is the Kandy–Ella train, which is a highlight in itself: book reserved seats weeks ahead. Tuk-tuks are everywhere; insist on the meter in Colombo or agree the fare first. PickMe is the local ride app.

🍽️ Best Restaurants

Rice and curry is the staple — a plate comes with 5–8 vegetable curries for ₹200–₹400 and is naturally vegetarian-friendly. Try hoppers, kottu roti and string hoppers. Sri Lankan food is genuinely spicy, hotter than most Indian regional cuisines; ask for 'less spicy' if unsure. King coconut (thambili) is sold everywhere for hydration.

🏨 Best Hotels

Sigiriya for the Cultural Triangle, Kandy for temples and transport, Ella for hill views, and either Galle or Mirissa for the south coast. Boutique villas and family guesthouses offer better value than chain hotels; a good guesthouse with breakfast runs ₹2,000–₹4,000.

🛡️ Safety & Travel Tips

Safe and welcoming, with low violent crime. Be aware of: strong rip currents on unpatrolled beaches, aggressive touts around Sigiriya and Galle, tuk-tuk drivers pushing gem and spice shops, and wild elephants near roads at dusk. Dress modestly at temples and never pose with your back to a Buddha statue — it causes real offence and tourists have been arrested for it.
